Synopsis

Bangladesh is surrounded by India from three sides with improperly managed land border, which is regarded as one of the most complex borders in the world. The border relations of both countries are multidimensional and shaped by the dynamics of internal politics. The identical Bangladesh-India border gave rise to a number of issues that often vitiated friendly relations between the two neighbours. Some odd happenings along the border are putting the management under challenge like informal trade; drug, arms and human trafficking; the killing of Bangladeshi citizens, etc. These are impacting national security parameters and also hindering the uplift of the deprived bordering area people. These challenges in the border management system cannot be overcome in a day through disjointed bilateral efforts. Enhanced and strategic cooperation between both countries is significantly required to address the emerging border management challenges.

This book is the result of extensive research work, which attempted to find out the challenges of border management and its impact on national security to suggest the way forward. To attain the objectives of this study and answer the questions that arose during the study period, it was important to adopt both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. To acquire knowledge and develop an understanding of the whole subject matter of border management and related affairs, this study explored the contents of different historical documents, govt. documents/reports in the public domain, editorials and news of leading dailies regarding Bangladesh-India border issues, etc. Interviews with personnel of border security agencies and different strata of people of the bordering areas have also been incorporated for a perspective of the ground realities to complement the documentary source materials and add importance to the research output. Impression and first- hand knowledge gained through visits to the bordering areas have facilitated further comprehension of the ground realities and problems in the management of the Bangladesh-India border.
